I have a 2009 HHR SS. The front cup holder sets between the bucket seats, directly behind the automatic trans shifter. From glancing, it appears the cup holder can be lifted up and popped out without having to remove the entire center console. I pulled on it a little bit, but stopped for fear of breaking something. Does anybody know if this pops right out or does the entire center console need removed?

It pops out. There are molded in tabs on the underside edge of the cup holder. Those tabs lock under the lip area of the console.
The time I took mine out it scared me too. Thought I was going to crack the cup holder in two.
I just slipped a very small screwdriver between the holder and console. Push in on the holder while pulling upwards on the holder with my other hand. Repeat for the other side. Seem to remember 4 tabs under there.

edit: I'm guessing that the auto's and 5 speeds have the same style cup holder ?
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong
