2006 HHR base model - amplifier cuts out once in a while - not associated with hitting a bump or anything - I can be sitting at a traffic light and it'll cut out (at which time it sounds like someone is talking into a tin can) - 20 minutes later it'll cut back in. Ideas?

to the forum Steve! You may have a failing head unit, but before condemning it, yank it out and check the connections. Here's a thread on removing the radio....

If its bad, replacement stock units are readily available, but you need to have programming done at the dealer before the new radio and your HHR will communicate. Or you can upgrade to an aftermarket unit.
Thought I had it ...
I thought pulling the connectors and cleaning them had done the trick - but we're back to tin-can alley again
Apparently there's something going on that the wiring diagram doesn't explain - as the tweeters and front speakers are on the same circuit - why would the door speakers (F) cut out while the tweeters still work IF they're on the same circuit? (both front and rear main speakers cut out - but I'm trying to isolate the problem) - it just doesn't make sense to me and I'm pretty good with wiring diagrams (better with 480V 3 phase industrial than DC but hey - a circuit is a circuit!)
It's the base model HHR - with the plain Jane radio - my concern is that if I replace the head unit I'll still have this problem - and I'm not keen on re-wiring all of the speakers -unless I have to that is!
They don't show a connector in the wiring diagram - however - is there a connector hidden under the dash where the door speakers cut out from the tweeters? (I'm thinking of the tweeters being "hard wired" while the front and rear door speakers go through a connector that may be failing) - all suggestions appreciated. I ask because I'm not getting power to the front door speakers - which are shown to be on the same circuit as the tweeters (which do work) -

hate to beat a dead horse
I hate to beat a dead horse - but - does anyone know of a connector common to the front and rear speakers but not common to the tweeters? If not I'll just re-wire the speakers - 'cause there's something odd going on - I get power at the primary connector (coming out of the radio) for F, FT and R speakers (F and FT are common) but no voltage @ anything but the tweeters. I suspect a connector somewhere downstream of the radio - if I had a hint as to where the danged thing was I could resolve this without re-wring the speakers ...
thanks
