Unhappy 2007 HHR 2.2 ECM Manual Transmission

My engine light came and I went to have codes checked. They tell me I need a new ECM will be 900.00 to replace. Can I purchase from junk yard and install myself? The ECM is the silver box in front of my fuse box correct? I was told the car will not start if I purchase one without having it flashed. Is this correct. Seems like 900.00 a lot of money when I see new ones for 150.00 on ebay. Does the manual transmission take a different ECM then automatic? What years will work on my 2007 2.2 engine? Hate getting ripped off.

Thanks
Waldo38

Who told you that a new ECM was needed???? Not a GM dealer???

Additionally, why did they say you needed a new ECM? What was the codes pulled?

All of Snoopy's questions X 2.

You need to take the vehicle somewhere else for a second opinion A.S.A.P., I think you're being set up to get screwed.

P.S. to the forum waldo38!

x3 What kind of problem are you having with your car? ECM's don't fail very often but there are alot of aftermarket shops out there that blame the ECM first when they can't find the problem.

If you get the proper ECM from a reputable source and make sure its cross checked and matches your engine, it should fire up after installation.

Now here's the big "BUT", you need to make sure the conditions that caused the original ECM to be "taken out" are corrected, if you don't you'll just kill another ECM.

A dealer can reflash the replacement ECM for you, the rates vary so you need to call first so you don't get a surprise.
