But did you finish the compression tests? My thinking is if it jumped timing, and bent all the valves(and the broken rod, and maybe more bent rods), it's not even worth pulling the oil pan.

near as i can tell the timing is correct it didnt jump but ill know more tonight or tomorrow turning the engine the cams line up perfectly according to the repair manual i have ... my guess is the rattle he thought he heard was indeed a knock not a rattle as we use the term for lifters and such..and when he kept driving it broke and that started the chain reaction to the adjusters and such ...but ill know for sure later tonight or tomorrow...

The chain and cam timing marks may line up but the crank mark might be off !

well just came in with the verdict the timing as far as i can tell is dead on but it looks as if the rod cap came off from what i can gather the bolts are missing from the rod the rod cap was in the bottom of the pan ... the rod broke at the wrist pin and it got chewed up by the crank ... part of the aluminum gallery of the secondary portion of the block that covers the crank got some chips took out of it but the block itself is intact...(miracle) i havent pulled the head yet to see if the valves are bent ( probably are) but when i measured them when i had the valve cover off they seemed consistant.. but that really dont say anything much but they may still be hope for the head...the crank on the other hand is a nogo its destroyed the rod journal is beat up badly and blue from overheating on a good note ( or maybe not) i didnt see where the rod had hit the cylinder bore that doesnt mean it didnt it just means by shining a light up from the bottom i couldnt see anything......my assumption ( he lied and ran it dry of oil and it threw a rod and sold it to get rid of it... but i dont care about that i like the car and will fix it...thank you guys for all of your help and input it was and is very appreciated.
