Just drove my buddy's 2010 and the car shudders with vibration right through the steering wheel when accelerating in the 40 MPH range,and also when braking. OK when just cruising. Any ideas where to start? Thanks.

 

Hubs, rear lower control arm bushings (LCA), tire balance , brake rotors rusty?, rear brakes adjusted correctly.
That's a start.

 

I'm gonna get under there today. Incredibly,he told me that he has never had the rear brakes done in 131000 miles. This is a new pal and I have no idea what he's thinking. I was thinking if the rear brakes are shot,the front are doing all the work,maybe the rotors are now warped or bearings toasted.

 

Usually, at that mileage, look at the rear LCA bushings, possibly ball joints, definitely rear brakes.

 

Front pads were shot,1 rotor was worn,all the boots and bushings were intact and the front end appeared to be tight. Gonna start with a brake job and bearings and see from there. Thanks.

 

Good start, don't bother with fancy drilled and or grooved rotors, they can cause pulsation in the brake pedal

 

I had the brake shudder as well. Started by adjusting rear brakes and that cleared 80% of the shudder. Front brakes needed replacing, rotors and pads.

Still had slight shudder and ignored it for a while. Then say bar bushing wore out so I did swaybar bushing, end links.

Much better.

Next day did the LCA bushings. They were ok but bought them and saw on a video how easy they were to replace, so I did.

Factory ones were not solid, had hollow pockets, or what ever you call them. New ones are solid rubber.

This eliminated all shudder and all front end movement. Used to feel it slowing down.

So, rear brakes first, then check front, then LCA is the way I will go from now on.
