36+ CEL codes found after jump starting
Hello all, first time caller, long-time listener.
My daughter has an 06 HHR where her mom accidentally left the lights on and the battery drained. So I jumped it and it started fine. Problem is the CEL is on, the power steering message is on, and, most importantly, her tranny feels like it jumps 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears and goes directly to 4th while starting at a dead stop. It does not downshift (neither through gas or lever). Also another thing is I hear a click coming from the shifter area every time I step on the brake.
I took it to Advanced Auto to get the CEL read and it returned 36+ codes! I'm pretty sure it's due to the once-dead battery, but how do I reset everything? I called a dealer and they want $151 just for the initial analysis. (I'm a long-time Chrysler guy; I know how to reset codes and such without a reader. I don't want to chance doing it on a GM.)
Codes:
P codes: 0562, 0563, 0601, 06-2, 0603, 0604, 0705, 0711, 0713, 0716, 0717, 0719, 0723, 0741, 0742, 0751, 0752, 0756, 0757, 0842, 0843, 0961, 0973, 0974, 0976, 0977, 1810, 1811, 1816, 1818, 2534, 2763, 2764
U codes: 0100, 0121, 0140 (there were more codes, I just didn't write them down).
Thank you.

First question. When you jumped it, did you use the the red point under the hood to the right of the oil filler neck as seen below? Also, all the codes you can supply us would be largely helpful, but it sounds like a big problem.
And by the way.
And by the way.

I was not aware of the jump posts under the hood. No owner's manual (daughter bought it last year 2nd or 3rd hand). I finally figured out the battery was in the back. Even if I knew about the jump posts under the hood, I couldn't possibly get a car in front to jump it -- the key couldn't be removed from the ignition and the shift lever wouldn't leave park to move it. Also, the rear hatch couldn't open until there was power. And yes...RED goes to RED and BLACK goes to BLACK.
I don't have any more codes. The Advance Auto person only gave me the first 36. The dealer guy told me most likely needs to be reset but they won't know until they start analysis.
Thanks...

Hello all, first time caller, long-time listener.
My daughter has an 06 HHR where her mom accidentally left the lights on and the battery drained. So I jumped it and it started fine. Problem is the CEL is on, the power steering message is on, Most likely that is because you did not hook the negative from the cable to one of the bolts at the top of the strut tower, and blew the power steering fuse. Check the fuse and replace as necessary. The owners manual has specific instructions to be used when jump starting the vehicle (as too many people connect it to the wrong connection, and blow the PS fuse - it happens a lot). and, most importantly, her tranny feels like it jumps 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears and goes directly to 4th while starting at a dead stop. It does not downshift (neither through gas or lever). Also another thing is I hear a click coming from the shifter area every time I step on the brake. That is totally normal!!! That is the interlock solenoid - totally normal.

Do you have a code reader? that is the best way to clear them - but if you don't, disconnect the NEGATIVE battery connection for a good 5 minutes - hopefully it will clear them for you. If it doesn't you will need a code reader - there is no other secret way. ps: the battery is under the floor in the REAR of the vehicle - don't try disconnecting what looks like power connections under the hood.

OH, it was jumped directly to the battery!!!! Well, check the PS fuse and go from there. Try disconnecting the battery as above for 5 minutes or so. The battery also needs to be fully charged else you will likely have some weird stuff happening.

Absolutely nothing was done. Thinking it could be the neutral safety switch, I asked my daughter via phone to rock the car back and forth, or take it out of park a few times then restart. I couldn't understand why the key wouldn't come out...or why she couldn't take it out of park. The battery was dead enough where there wasn't enough power to unlock the hatch. Luckily my jumper cables were long enough to come in through the rear right door. (I found a mod for installing an external switch on this site...may be a good idea.)
