I'll take reader's suspense over owner issues any day lol! I feel for them, I was floored how dysfunctional the HHR's get when they lose power. Hopefully it just the computer having a hiccup from the dead battery and as mentioned a bad battery will cause these issues too.
Wow! Ok...here's the resolution to the suspense. Just got back from visiting my mechanic friend. His reader found 64 codes. He cleared them all from tranny to pcm issues. Took it for a test drive and the tranny is all good, not in limp mode. The speedo works...and the power steering message is all gone. Everything is good! We spent more time catching up then he actually fixing it. And the best part: I saved $151 by not going to the dealer...they were gonna charge me that for analysis.
Thank you all for your assistance and interest in this matter!

Thanks...I'll drive it while my daughter's away at National Guard Boot Camp this Summer. I drive a Jeep...which means I'll get 20 MORE mpg out of the HHR (it's a Jeep thing...you wouldn't understand ;-) )
