Alternator
Just a comment about batteries, when on charge the battery starts to gas at 2.36 volts the battery is being charged and mixeing the acid, if a shorted cell that cell voltage will shoe a very high voltage, my comments are for a flooded flet plate battery, there are others, gell cell, agm. the 2.36 volts is per cell, 14.16 and will go higher.

And:
Electrical guru Mark Hamilton of M.A.D. Enterprises points out that amperage is a measure of current flow, so an ammeter is actually a "flow meter" that's intended to measure current flow to the battery (under normal conditions) or discharge from the battery (in the case of alternator system failure). On a typical flow meter, all output must be directed through the device to obtain an accurate reading. In the ammeter's case, that means all the alternator output used to recharge the battery must first be routed through the ammeter under the dash. Which requires a heavy-gauge cable and presents a possible fire hazard. And the ammeter itself must be able to handle all this current flow, so it must have a higher current rating than the alternator's maximum rated output.

Alternaters range from 150 to 400 amp output bacause of all the electrical equipment in todays cars, if you have a lot of audio stuff, high- sub woofer you need more larger battery and alternater.
I am having power issues with my 2006 HHR. My car kept dying so I replaced the battery but it kept dying. Now I have replaced the alternator twice. The alternator is sending 13 amps back to the battery and the battery is charging. But my battery keeps going dead. Any Ideas?
