Automatic transmission dipstick on 2.2?
The car must be level and the ATF must be at 104F and the motor must be running. Then remove the level control plug.
Why worry about the ATF level to begin with? Where could it go? Onto the ground is the only place.
Most manufacturers have realized that now. Plus with synthetic ATF being long life.

As I recall, depending how severe the breach in the vacuum diaphragm in the modulator was, it wouldn't be all that 'mysterious' considering the exhaust smoke that would cause. I don't think the HHR trans is has one, however.
Last time I ever saw a modulator valve was on the remaining THM 350's (rear driver) we made in Windsor before we re-tooled to the THM 125 (front driver) in 1982.
THM 125's and the 4T40 & 4T45E didn't need modulators due to the different clutch pistons, check valves and valve body changes.
Modulator valves went out of style with the glass T Tops.
They are sometimes used on R 400 heavy pick-up truck diesel apps, I think.
