Can't unlock 2006 HHR with a dead battery

My HHR has a dead battery. The key is locked inside of the car. How can I get in the car so I can open the hood and put a charger on the battery or open the trunk to change the battery?

Assuming you don't have anyone who can bring you your extra key, or that you don't have an extra key, call the AAA or a 24 hour locksmith. Once you gain access to the vehicle, please make sure you follow the jump starting instruction in the owner's manual to the letter, otherwise you'll blow the fuse on the power steering.

And to the forum beagle84, sorry your first post isn't in better circumstances.

yeah, not much you can do unless you have functioning onstar or experience breaking into one. I bought a spare key to keep in my wallet, not too expensive and programming it is easy.

Just pick up a universal key. They are just lying on the ground in many areas!

Get you Vin number and proof of ownership and go to the dealer. They can make you a spare key that you lack and show you how to sync it to your vehickle. my father inlaw did this a state away with no dealer near. We had one made and sent it over night to him and he got into it and started it. Also now he has a spare key.

The key is cheaper than a window or lock smith.

Some local police will still unlock cars too. Might not hurt yo check.

The worst one was my buddy took his dads 78 indy pace car on weekend. He locked the key in it at the gas station with it running. He was not to have had it out in the first place. I don;t know if he dad ever found out.

Can't you get a $3.00 key at HomeDepot to have in case of "lock outs" in the future? It won't start the car but it will open the door.

You could, but what if it's a case of a lost key. Need one that will start it too. If you're going to get a backup, get one that does both.

You can use a wire to lift the lock button.

Just FYI, when you have the hatch open to replace your battery, don't close it after you remove the old battery. It's a ***** to release the hatch w/o power.
