Cel, code P300, p301, tc off

2007, 2.4 liter engine, 66k miles bought this “great deal” no Issues in the 10 miles I test drove before I bought. Engine was smooth , no putting at the exhaust, no cluster lights.
Drive vehicle 30 miles to my house parked for the night , left the next morning and service traction control turned on as I was leaving. Figuring the tires need to be replaced it was a tire sensor. Not even 50 ft CEL came on. Drove to autozone and p300 came up on obd. Parked car and reran codes on a different obd 300& 301 were engaged as well as abs.
symptoms
hard shift from park, reverse or drive
19 mpg highway/city
rough idle
hard shift in first gear kicks in rear end of car
slight gas odor from tail pipe
A chugging sound at tail pipe
things I’ve troubleshot
  • changed air filter (it was visibly dirt)
  • Changed the camshaft position sensor
  • replace all spark plug to oem recommend
  • replaced coil pack to cylinder one
  • swapped fuel injectors (no change is p301)
  • checked resistance at variable valve solenoid (clicks 14 ohms) on intake and out output
  • checked the speed wheel sensor 17.4 ohms
  • tested the battery (in working condition)
  • inspected wiring harnesses for damage
  • pulled most fuses to look for damage

I’m at a loss and am about to take it into a shop.

to the forums!

You can get a "loaner" compression tester at any of the chain auto parts stores.

I think your seller cleared the codes before you bought it.

Welcome to the site, check the wire harness to the O2 sensors, the ground wires for the coils and the injectors. Check for bent pins and corrosion in those connectors. One code can effect the TC , you have replaced a lot of parts. Now inspect the simple things. Clean the throttle body, clean the MAF sensor.

Im 97% positive that he cleared the codes. I was able to replicate the first time the codes set.. I drove it 30 miles home turned off engine. Restarted and codes came back. I’m wondering if there might be legal repercussions from him intentionally seeking me a faulty vehicle.

i will definitely try to clean the throttle body. I’ve checked harness and pins they are in good working condition. I’ll check the o2 sensor , I asked a mechanic if that might be a possibility but he said I would have thrown a code.
but at this point I believe it will be something like a faulty wire harness or bent pin.
thank you for the suggestions.

im a chef not a mechanic, but i know enough to get my in trouble . Thank you once again

Legal repercussions ? For a 17 year old car that I would guess was sold “As Is” ? If you bought it from an individual then tough luck. If it came from a dealer you may have a 30 day return option.

Caveat emptor , buyer be ware. I always bring my scan tool and ask permission to run the scan, if they decline, I walk away, If they are ok then the HHR is usually ok. Deserterat posted about his experience, it was the MAF sensor

In California, the seller is required to provide a smog certificate. Rarely happens with private sale, but you would have legal recourse.

It’s a deceitful ad. I asked specifically about the engine if there was any work done he said no. I pulled injector one brand new, spark plug brand new, the coil pack brand new. Only cylinder one has been worked on I even swapped injector expecting the misfire to move. Stays on cylinder one But regardless I need to find the issue that is causing this condition to exist . I probably won’t get my money back but by the end I’ll be well versed in the layout of this vehicle.

it was a rookie mistake. I just needed a car and made a really bad purchase. But it’s fixable if I can isolate issue. I got some maf cleaner and will really look the system over . Thank you
