Clicking Ignition

Need some help diagnosing. Periodically my 2006 LT makes a clicking when going to start. It sounds like maybe a relay is sticking? Does not always happen, but intermittently.

I don't want to spend money o a new starter if that's not the issue.

BTW, it always starts, sometimes clicks once, twice, three times, sometime no clicks.

Any suggestions of where I can start diagnosing?

Check the battery and battery connections. Check the battery cables to the under hood fuse box and make sure there tight.

X2, that clicking you're hearing is the starter solenoid trying to engage the Bendix drive. It's usually an indication of low battery voltage, a bad connection, or a failing starter on rare occasions.

To get your battery tested, stop by pretty much any auto-parts store, and they will put a load-tester on it to test the health of the battery. Best of all, generally it is a FREE test.

Is it the solenoid? Could be the relay under the hood that hold the magic smoke. The description is rather vague, and we have been duped a few times by those kind of descriptions. (there really are relays and such that engage when you turn the key)

Probably a good idea to open the hood and listen for the sound with your beautiful assistant turning the key. If you have remote start, you may have to fool the hood latch switch.
