CMP sensor cause rough idle?
CMP sensor cause rough idle?
Hello,
This is for a 2009 HHR LS (2.2 liter).
It started giving me a rough idle with no indicator lights.
The issue seemed to go away for after the car sat for a night, the next day the engine indicator light came on after a little bit of driving but no rough idle.
I took it to AutoZone and the test module gave a P0010 error (Intake camshaft position (CMP) actuator solenoid control circuit bank 1. The ECM has detected a fault in the camshaft actuator solenoid circuit bank 1. Probable cause: 1. Open or short circuit condition bank 1 actuator solenoid circuit. 2. Failed Actuator solenoid bank 1. 3. ECM Fault.).
I used the test module to clear the code from the car computer, the engine indicator light went off and the car drove fine until the next day. The light came on again and this time the car died on me and continued with the rough idle (the car starts easily).
I took it back to AutoZone and re-ran the test module. This time I got the same P0010 error as well as the P0011 error (Intake camshaft position (CMP) system performance bank 1. Explanation: The ECM has detected the desired camshaft position and actual position do not agree – bank 1. Probable cause: 1. Open or short circuit condition. 2. Mechanical condition with the CMP actuator. 3. Failed CMP actuator solenoid. 4. Low oil level.)
I checked the engine oil level and found it to be clean and at the correct level.
I was hoping someone might have seen this issue and / or could offer any insight or advice.
My hope is that is is just the sensor, but I would really appreciate any additional opinions.
I really appreciate the time taken to read and respond.
Thanks very much.

Same thing happened to me. They just go bad. They are not hard to replace, but replacement is the only remedy. Forget what they told you at Autozone., the things just fail. If you are handy with tools, you can DIY. After you remove the engine shroud, one bolt, one electrical connection and you are done. It is even marked in the intake manifold as to which one it is. If you like , you can join Alldatadiy.com. It shows how to repair it.
P0010 and P0011 point to problems with the Camshaft Actuator Solenoid (SOLENOID, not SENSOR - they are two different thing entirely). If you use the search tool at the top of the page, and search for P0010, look at the thread on how to replace the failing solenoid in the HOW-TO section.
