Thank you, I do notice when mine gets up that high which obviously isn't high it smells hot. Could be because it has an issue in other areas.

Don't know when the fan is enabled but when coolant reaches 93 C it drops back to 89. I assume that is the thermostat letting coolant out to the radiator.

Wierd, I just read these posts a few days ago and low and behold my HHR is starting to overheat. Hit 240 driving home from work tonight, 32 degrees out. I hear a gurgling/cascading fluid noise when I turn it on and it is cold. Gonna have to call the dealer first thing in the morning.

This may seem like a stupid question, but are you sure there is antifreeze in it? Many people run straight water, which is a bad thing to do for other reasons, but when it hits freezing temps, the radiator freezes and the engine overheats do to the lack of circulating coolant. I see it all the time the first time it gets really cold out.

Check your coolant level. It's low.
Might have a slow leak in the system.

Lay on the hood and cook the ol' eggs lol.
No insulation under the ol' hood. Check it out.

You are right- turns out my heater core had sprung a leak and coolant was draining into it (the gurgling noise only happened with the heater on). I was actually burning antifreeze in my heater- I had no idea what the smell was until my bro told me it smells like pancake syrup. I also was having issues with a greasy film on the inside of my windshield- the antifreeze residue. How exactly the core sprung a leak, I don't know, but I am glad I noticed it and got it fixed before I got to the shutoff warning.
