Open the door. Lift up on the bottom of the back of the door. If there is any vertical movement or “looseness” then the hinge is bad.

If the hinges are good I would then look to see if the car has been hit in the front and pushed the fender back.
I noticed the widening of the gap too and tried to lift the door as you said but it's solid, no movement. I've had the car for a few years and I don't believe it's been hit in the front. There are no dents or damage on the front.

How does the other side look? Is it square with the B pillar?
It's easy to tell by looking at the whole door and then some.
