First time code

Here goes. 2008 ls panel Code P0171. Engine idles and surges kinda rough in gear and park. Temp fluctuates. Normally runs 80 81 degrees. Now it's getting as high as 103 and lows of 75 76.

Put in a full tank of premium and injector cleaner, nada.

had a mouse attempt to build nest in air cleaner by using the sound deadening material between the quarter and the door.

Don't think it got much further than that.

Can't find any vacuum leaks.....

Stumped, and don't want to just throw money at parts.

Check your MAF sensor, and the hose that runs from the valve cover to the elbow by the throttle body

Pulled the MAF sensor yesterday, not a lot to check there. Sprayed around the entire engine bay with contact cleaner looking or leak, nada.

Would, could a faulty temp sensor cause the afore mentioned issues?

The MAF will cause those problems. Go to an auto parts store and get a can of MAF cleaner, clean it. Check the wires to it and the connector the mice probably did something. Look inside the tube make sure there is no nesting debris. Check in the throttle body for nesting debris. Mice love the taste of wire insulation.

If the wires are good, I would suspect the connector is loose.

Try the Search function for code P0171. There are numerous threads about it and some solutions.
In fact, there was even a continued discussion in one of those threads earlier today.

Did all that has been advised before I posted, thats why I'm here.

No mice made it past the air filter.

Temp sensor, or would the maf cause the temp to fluctuate?

On another note, when you guys press the interior air recirculation, does it kick on the ac compressor? I noticed mine does. I'm not turning on the ac just the interior air recirculate. Is this normal?

Yes, it's normal!

As Was said before, use a proper MAF sensor cleaner.

The MAF sensor controls the A/F mixture, It measures the amount of air that goes past it and adjusts the injectors.

If it is malfunctioning it will cause erratic operation which causes over heating.

Your problem is the MAF or it's wiring/connector 90% for sure. Other remote possibility is the canister purge valve or it's tubing (the one under the hood), or possibly the exhaust flex pipe is cracked.

P0171 means that there is too much air in the mixture, or the computer thinks there is.

The fact that you had mice in the air cleaner and that you evicted them leads to a MAF fault since you must disconnect it to get to the air filter.

Your A/C question leads me to believe you need an Owners Manual. There is a link in my sig.

Yes, I did need a manual.

I get a new MAF sensor and go from there.

Thanks everyone

Well, went and bought a MAF sensor, no good….. Changed air filter…..

Any other ideas?

Temp still high, still surging at idle.

Sprayed every where with throttle body cleaner looking for leak, nada.
