Fuel gauge / range indicator issue

I just purchased a 2008 HHR LT and have been fixing issues as you find with any used vehicle I filled the tank and noticed the gauge will go up and down while driving and had set the instrument panel to tell me the range and noticed that it will go up while driving then drop when I stop then start going up when I start driving again think it is the fuel level sensor but not sure anyone else have this issue and know what the cause is

Not absolutely sure what you are asking because of the lack of punctuation. But I take a guess after a couple of questions.

Are you speaking of the fuel level gauge, located on the instrument panel, going up and down? Or (and) are you speaking of the Driver Information Center read out for the estimated mileage you will get from the filled tank of gas THAT IS BASED ON YOUR IMMEDIATE DRIVING HABITS?

Well thank you MR EDUCATION. On correcting my lack writing a formal paper. I was unaware this was so formal, I thought this would be a place to speak with people about the vehicle and get assistance nicely. Do not need or want to hear attitude or condescending comments (deal with that enough).

Why are you so critical/touchy.......I was NOT being so with you. As I explained I was confused at what you were attempting to ask.....as I plainly indicated.

So now that this is settled, would you care to explain what you are experiencing? MAYBE I can help.....maybe I can't.

Yeah. Same here. I couldn't really make out what the 1st post was asking.

As far as the "range" and "miles to go"(or whatever they're called) Don't even pay any attention to those until you've used up a few tanks of gas. The computer uses an algorithum, average based formula. In other words, it averages things out based on previous miles/gals. used.
Until you get your own set of averages logged into the computers memory, then it's probably not going to be an accurate thing to go by.

to the forum!

George explained things very accurately, and if your HHR is missing the owner's manual which describes the functions of the various DIC readouts and how to zero them out for a fresh start. Just click the link below to download a manual for your model year in PDF form.

IDK after I fill my gas tank the dash mounted fuel gauge only goes down until I put more gas in. The estimated fuel range thing in the DIC is never right at all.

The fuel economy reading on the DIC can be fairly accurate if you remember to reset it to zero when you fill up, but the best way to check fuel economy is still the way Great Grandpa did it. Grab a pencil and a scrap of paper.

welcome to the site!

i think you are saying the dash gauge is fluctuating.
when it does, the computer is reading the different fuel level readings, and adjusting (changing) the miles remaining accordingly?

maybe someone replaced the fuel pump which probably has a 'sender' attached, and did not 'align it' properly?
