FYI cracked crankcase

FYI

Just turned in my SS for excessive coolant usage yesterday. It started using coolant last week. I first noticed the engine temp rise to above 210*. Checked coolant after cool down and was low in the top hose. Filled and took almost a quart there, filled resevoir to half. Every other day needed to fill resevoir with almost a pint. No leaks to be found. No coolant in the oil.
I thought it might be blown head gasket.

Dealer mech. called today and says the crankcase is cracked and will be getting a new engine next week. He says the factory rep. has seen several of these occuring.

History:
Bought July 09
first service at 3200 miles
second service at 7000 miles
engine broke at 7900 miles

I'll keep updated as necessary.

Damn dude, sorry for the crack, but at least there's the warranty.

Angry found this Bulletin form ChevyMgr

Only the SS has the LNF engine. So it looks like any ECOTEC may have this.. I believe mine was built in Dec 2008.

Trans

My trans on my 08 cracked and the dealer couldn't figure out how it cracked. No impact damage or anything. It was just cracked. The trans went completely and I had to get it replaced (under warranty). They were stunned since they said "that shouldn't have happened!"

Exclamation

The link to the TSB didn't list the LNF engine but since they are the same blocks I am thinking they can be affected too. I know of one 08 SS that had the engine replaced for that same issue. The effective date range of July-Dec 08 would be pretty much the end of the 08MY and the start of the 09MY (I think the MY switch is in August).

But I wonder if they made a change that fixed it. This is not encouraging.

Exclamation Its back!!!

New engine installed, picked up today and broke it in nicely after warm up

I have to give the dealer a big for quick turn on this problem.

I hope cracked crank cases are only a fluke and not a systemic problem with the ECOTEC aluminum blocks.
