Cold weather?

 

Well mine now has a new fun. Besides having the i lit up, it now say "SVC TIRE SNS something something blah blah" it is offically totally fried now. Great time for a trip to the dealership again.

 

Just another case of "Big Brother" having to protect us from ourselves. We're saddled with these damn things because you just can't get people to check their tires. Unfortunately these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to government required doodads. I don't like 'em, think they a pain, but worse is coming in the next few years.

 

Yeah, I like your thoughts. I said the same thing to my wife Friday nite driving in St. Petersburg going over the Tampa Bay Bridge when the idiot light came on with the DIC message to service etc. I checked the display graphic and it showed normal pressures on all except the "--" on the RF. I said, I'm bringing a roll of electric tape next time this happens so I can cover the idiot "I" light. Maybe eventually the idiot light will burn out!!

I didn't even have to reset it. Then next morning when I started up, everything was normal again. I'm still trying to figure out how that air left the RF and came back all by itself. Sure is great technology - not. So far I have had one sensor replaced on another wheel. Even though it was covered under warranty, they still have to unseat your tire bead to do it. You can retrain your sensors by following the routine in the owners manual. If the sensor is OK, it will reset. When it doesn't reset, it's time for the dealer or the electrical tape.

 

As much as I hate them, I've got a rim that won't hold air when it's under 35#'s and cold out so I check the computer at start up and then manually with an electronic reader. Then usually add 5+ pounds.
Will the car not pass inspection if the TPMS light is on? I didn't get them on my wife's winter rims so we just ignore the light.
I hate the Gov't nanny as well. Next up is a mandated back-up camera. Joyful more technology to go on the fritz and keep people from their "Situational Awareness" of actually knowing where their kids are. (or if their tires are filled)

My son put custom wheels on his Cobalt and got sensors from Tire Rack that were compatible with the stock 315MHz GM system for $34 a piece. They've been on over 6 mos without a problem.

 

I wonder if TPS are required to function. If the government mandates a system, they usually mandate that it function for a certain amount of time so consumers don't get stuck fixing it. They might not have mandated that owners have to keep it functional.

If I was designing a system, I would have designed it so tires don't have to be removed from the rims to replace a sensor.

 

At least in Virginia any "Warnings" on dashboard=reject (or we can fix that for you$$$)

 

We don't have any vehicle inspections in Wisconsin other than an emission check in the Milwaukee and Madison areas.

Unless the TPS system is in the main plc, there should be a way to disable it.

 

Federal Law says cannot be disabled in US. Move to Canada and it is optional. Remember Ford SUV's rolling over because people could not use a tire gauge, or read the tire pressure requirements published on the driver side door panel and the owner manual? Somebody then said "there ought to be a law", then Mother said "here is your law". So, even though I want to say ....(political talk) I will not, but you can blame the people who "fight for your rights" against the Evil Corporations that are trying to exterminate their customer base. Sorry!
