Ooohhh, dang. Yep, sounds like the pistons and valves are contacting, not good. You need to get it back into proper timing before you try to crank the engine at all, like for the compression test.

The valves may already be bent, from all the cranking that's been done already.

At least you will have a new head gasket and valves! It’s a tedious job but not very complicated.

Except when they send you a head for a 2.2, and you have a 2.4. Or vice-verse.

Now, don’t go reminding us of that mess, changing valves is fairly easy if you rent the tool for compressing the valve springs and have a helper to get the keepers out!

you will need a torque wrench and an E24 socket for those four funny bolts in the timing chain sprockets cavity.

here’s a how to

Ok yes I saw the video on youtube about changing the valve two possible ways. When I look at the bottom engine I think it's very oily and dirty which could indicate a bad head gasket? So you tell me that because the engine is not timed properly the pistons are hitting valves, right? Do you have a video tutorial about removing the front cover because I have no idea how to do it and I think the holes doesn't align I will also have to raise the engine with a jack I think...

Also I could get a low mileage HHR 2007 2.2L LS for a good price. Mine is 2007 LT 2.4L. Will there be interchangeable pieces like starter, battery, spark plug, solenoid, alternator? Because I will need a car soon. I don't have time to perform all these repair for now.

Everything but the engine s are interchangeable, wheels, interior, transmission, body parts.

There was a whole lot of missing info in post #1. Nothing else makes sense. And it went downhill from there. Most shade tree mechanics need on-site help at minimum with what we’re seeing here.

The 2.4 is variable valve timing. The 2.2 isn’t. Slightly different bore and stroke. But they share a lot of parts - all the ones you named and more. If the 2.4 is nice, it maybe worth fixing later, so keep it if you can afford the money and space. If it’s not so nice, it might still be worth fixing if you can do it on the cheap yourself, but you probably need to assume r&r for the head and valves in addition to the timing chains. It’s the kind of project a lot of people plan on without actually getting around to doing. If the body and/or the interior are the same color, that’s points in favor of a parts car, but you shouldn’t need that if the 2.2 is nice.

Good luck!
