Then you likely broke the clockspring.

For sure. That's how my Toyota P/U got a broken clockspring; it was in the shop waiting for a new steering box and the owner's kid played race car.
The test would be to try the horn. The sensor needs to know what straight ahead is, if it goes back together different from it's last calibration it doesn't know.
