Hi guys. Long time listener, first time caller.

I clean the throttle body on my 2006 HHR and now my RPMs are high, 2500. This is one for the pros. What I done:

1) searched for leaks, found none

2) disconnect the battery for 30 min, nothing

3) drove it for 30 min for computer to relearn, nothing

4) Clean the MAF, just it case, nothing.

Am I missing something. Tell me I don't have to spend $110 at the dealer for them to relearn. That's what they quoted. Six pack of beers for the solver of this problem or a good pat in the back. You pick. LOL

Welcome to the site My question would be when you cleaned the throttle body did you move the throttle blade by hand ( by force it open )?

There is a plastic gear inside the throttle body that can be damaged.

 

Question time....

Did you use "Throttle Body Cleaner" or did you use Carb Cleaner which is a no-no?

Did you manually manipulate the throttle butterfly?

When you cleaned the MAF sensor, did you use "MAF Sensor Cleaner"?

When you cleaned the MAF sensor, did you touch it with your fingers?

Have you double checked the connector at the MAF sensor, if it's not making contact by being fully seated, you'll have issues right away.

Unfortunately, HHR throttle bodies are fragile little critters that will not tolerate anything but cleaning with the proper products and very gentle wiping with a lint free cloth to mop up loosened carbon deposits.

I disconnected the TPS before I even touched the butterfly. Removed the TB and then cleaned it. I used Sea Foam (throttle cleaner) for the throttle and MAF cleaner for the MAF. I used gloves when I cleaned the MAF and even then I did not touch it.

I checked all connections and found nothing lose. To add, when the engine is cold it idles fine, but when it warms up the idle goes up. At times when I'm driving the idle becomes normal, but this is once very 15-20 min of driving.

Ok, I was going to do the Throttle ReLearn that Lucky sent, but I have a question about Procedure 1, numbers 7 and 8. I turn the (7) AC on for 10 seconds and at the same time I (8) put the car on D for 10 secs. OR turn the AC on for 10 seconds turn it off and then do 8.

So, if 7 and 8 are done at the same time do 9 and 10 go together as well?

 

Lucky, I tried procedure 1 and 3 and nothing. As soon as I accelerate the rpm goes up again. Sometimes if it is in gear the rpms normalize and if I put it in part at that point the rpms stay normal, but if I accelerate it starts all over.

 

sounds like maybe the TB drive gear is stripped out, you may need a new TB

 

I know the gears are plastic and cam be damaged. Here is a picture of the gears
