How to test Brake Transaxle Shift Solenoid before re-installing old one

Hi. I removed 2006 HHR shifter assembly (BTSI)O because of key locking. Problem started on 105 degree F day and got worse where key release tab was always needed.

Later there was a 'wrestling match' with shifter to get it out of park and the HHR won. It was stuck in park and the car appeared 'dead' electrically. Key would not turn more than 1/4 way. I decided to probe around the shifter, eventually removing it.

With BTSI out, the brake solenoid rod moves freely and is clean. By extending the solenoid rod I can step through the gears fine. This was not the case when I first took it out though. Maybe from trying to force it the thing got straightened out shifting without cable connected.

Also the metal pin steps through the gears OK and makes the necessary contact in Park to allow key removal (my understanding of it) So I am ready to re-install the shifter.

My question is how do I know the brake solenoid works? Is there a test I can do to activate it or test resistance on it?

I am not a mechanic. If I take my time the shifter will be re-installed fine. I just don't want to take it out again.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Listen for the "click"? The shifter solenoid won't work unless the brake solenoid does.

spray your favorite WD40 type product on the solenoid shaft.

Thanks donbrew. I have the WD40 on the solenoid shaft and ready to go.
If you know of a way to actually test the solenoid before I re-install it I would like to try it. If it is not worth the trouble or too hard then I will just put the pieces back and listen for the click. Thanks again.
