HVAC Overhaul question...

So, after replacing the resistor to get the blower fan working, low and behold, about 6 months later, same problem. Blower fan only works on full blast. I bite the bullet and take it to dealer (well out of warranty at this point). The HVAC dash unit will have to totally be replaced at this point so they say. A $400 piece before labor. This necessary? You think this would get rid of the problem for good? Could I just grab the unit off ebay and take it to a mechanic i trust?? Anyone out there want to give me one and replace it for me for free?? (LOL!) Ok..

Check or call the salvage yards, with an 06 you should be able to get one for alot less.

you'll probably save even more if you find a pull your own part yard.

i think

the problem is in the fan motor , something in the fan-something -trash- in the fan , or there may be a wire damaged. in older vehicles you can replace just the fan , not the entire housing. if they won't give you 36000/3yr warantee , like it had when new i wouldn't do it. are you saying that you cannot buy just the fan motor? if you could live without it for a day or two , you could have a mechanic remove it , and have it tested by a place that specializes in rebuilding just electric motors. we have a place locally that does that. i used to work in a factory , building electric motors there is not much to them . most will run just a fan for a very long time even when they get very worn. i believe it is something simple that is causing that resistor to go.

Actually it could be something completely unrelated

an example. my wife's 02 sunfire. there was a problem with the speaker
the dealer replaced the speaker. then said it was in the radio, so they replaced the radio.
finally they ended up replacing the BCM. good thing we bought GMPP at 35 months

So it is a good idea to buy a GMPP plan before your 3yrs 36k miles expires

Hey

Thanks for all the great advice guys, I apprectiate it. Im taking it soon to a mechanic i trust to see if he can truly diagnose the problem, if it is the HVAC unit then ill find a cheaper way to deal with it than the dealer.

Do the HHRs still use the resistor module?
I had a malibu (previous generation) that blew the resistor twice, quite common.

Has yours been repaired for the leak on the air inlet butyl patch issue? Leaks in that area were somewhat common on the 06's and would burn up blower motors and resistors.

IF that area is leaking, you will continue to burn up blower motors and resistors.
