And why don't the high beams work on auto setting ?

Uh. Did you read my post?

I said you didn't post what year HHR you have.

64 ok? Read my post again. #64 does not pertain to the headlights.
Fuse #65,66 are the low beam fuses.

They didn't go out at the same time!!!! One burns out, and then the other - most people don't even realize they are driving with one burnt out, until it goes totally dark.

auto does not control it switching to high beam automatically!! that is why the highs came on when you "put the switch on manual override".

Fuses OK. Sounds like it's time to check the bulbs as has been stated.

If you don't understand how the HHR auto headlight system works, maybe you should read your owners manual.
If you don't have a manual, they are available for download "free" on this website. I would post you a link to the correct year owners manual download, but you still haven't said what year HHR you have( I know I asked twice)

Nope. That's why I asked the year model. The 1st year HHR, 2006, had a different setup. I believe it was only the the parking lamps that came on for the DRL system. (someone can clarify this if I'm wrong). The following years had the actual headlights for DRL's.

edit: Is this a Canadian HHR? If so, they seem to have a different system as far as the headlamp, DRLs are concerned. I'm not familiar with the Canadian version. Someone else would have to fill you in.

So if the light lever is left in the high beam position and in the auto position should the high beam lights come on when its dark and you start the 2006 and put it in drive ..?
