Replace the chains and water pump, and the front guide bolt. Your metal shavings are from the upper guide and the chain rubbing. Change the oil and filter.

Opening the chain cover the (I'm guessing?) upper guide bolt dropped out. I already have the replacement dorman one I ordered with my chain kit. What about these other two bolts? Will I be able to reuse them or do I need to order new ones? They are chewed up pretty bad and I didn't see any bolts that came with the kit.

Also the mounting bolt that is holding the gasket (I read to cut the gasket off); do I need to remove that to install the new gasket?

Yes order new bolts the top one for the front guide should be replaced by

Dorman 917-954

the OEM bolt is what broke to damage the guide, the oiler must be replaced, it’s chewed up

ZZP, RockAuto, GM parts direct all carry them, do not over tighten them, snug , then a 1/4 turn if you don’t own a torque wrench or properly 89 inch pounds.

read thru this assembly guide

I think you definitely found the source of the metal filings in the oil.

Strange, all that bolts heads shaved away, yet you say the magnet didn't p/up any metal..

And most any Auto Parts store has the Tool loaner program, if you need a torque wrench. Just saying..

I don't trust loaner torque tools they can be abused and not perform accurately. I do have some torque wrenches but they've been in the garage not used in a couple years and I heard that can also make them inaccurate so I hope there is a little leeway when using them.

I can only assume that maybe the shavings lost their magnetism or were picked up by the magnet by the pump? I did find where the chain was rubbing the timing cover as well.
