Wait so couldn't I theoretically just buy a newql Monroe quick strut and not do this it has all these parts built in right ?

They must be crap build quality then since the manufacturer date says Jan 2015..is there a better replacement available?

Someone else will have to answer that for you. Mines a SS, so I have no 1st hand experience with the regular HHR replacement struts and which ones are better.

Mine were two plastic discs with bb sized ball bearings in tween them in a small amount of white lithium grease

If it is the struts that are definitely the cause, it might be worthwhile to call Monroe to see if they can do anything for you. They do come with a good warranty, but only for the original purchaser - but who knows, they still might be able to help you out considering they are still fairly new units.

That's the passenger side strut mount under the hood.
