You need a special cat in NY.

You could test by having your lovely assistant hold a rag over the tailpipe while you stick your head under the hood.

Oldblue, that is great news. My test meter shows emissions problems also, and since my cat is original, it is probably ready for replacement (85 k miles). Is that the brand you used? I have not researched it yet, but from their description is does sound perfect. Thanks again

Truth is, probably easier and cheaper to change cat and flex pipe together, instead of having to pull the two apart and weld the new flex pipe to the old cat. The flex pipe is $35 at Rock Auto

Don, are you sure about needing a special cat in NY? RockAuto descriptions only say
(Not legal for sale or use in California; Not legal for sale or use in New York for vehicles with CA emissions).

I didn't think regular passenger cars had to pass CA emissions here. But I have no idea myself about any of this. Just happy my street legal race car is over 25 years old so does not have to be tested anymore!!!

I don't know, here is the NY website that explains: New Aftermarket Catalytic Converter Requirements & Used Catalytic Converter Prohibition - NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation

As I read it; you are leaving off the "or 50 state" part, and it has to meet labeling requirements. Maybe I am wrong

wow, thanks for the info. Have to check into it. I am going to go to my friends shop that does inspections now and see if I pass (I will erase all codes right before I get there). And I will ask them about what you told me. And I will let you know what he says.

I think if you clear codes, you reset all readiness tests, and they cannot perform your smog test. You won't pass with a check engine light either. That's why I asked if you could get an extension. Drive cycles and all that.

Lucky for me, NY is not nearly a stringent as CA is.

You might check the fuel pressure.

Well, I finally switched my number 1 and number 4 injector, and guess what? The new code I get is P0304. I feel pretty certain that I need to get new injectors
