New member with a problem

I am a new member here, but I have been driving a 2009 flash blue SS model for the last three years. Very pleased with the car. Only problems have been the key stuck in the ignition that seems to be common with the HHR (fixed under warranty) and an intermittent tire pressure sensor. However I found this forum looking for info on my first serious issue. The engine light is on and it is throwing codes P0011 and P0014 (intake and exhaust camshaft timing). I seems unlikely that both sensors or both solenoids would go out at the same time. Anyone know of a common fault that could cause this? I have been an avid DIY since my first car ('66 Chevelle Malibu) so I am comfortable doing most repairs.

I wish I could Silver11. I drive it alot and have over 38,000 on it. Called the dealer and they told me the parts in question are out of warranty. I was going to try pulling the sensors first and clean them.

Those pieces are prone to acting up with old/dirty oil, when was your last oil change?

A few people have had the same problems with those Camshaft Postition Actuator Solenoids that cause the P0011 and p0014 codes. Here is a link to some documentation (including pics) on how to replace them (pretty easy job). Part numbers are included as well. You can try a quick oil change, or just change them, as they aren't a whole lot of $'s. I'd lean towards replacing them rather than clean them, as that hard shifting really can't be good for the tranny, and if it doesn't fix it after cleaning ......... .

Oil is at about 10% acording to the DIC. So I need to change it anyway. I don't have the hard shifting problem since I prefer the manual 5 speed (can't see giving up 35hp for a autotrans I don't want ). The only symtoms are a rough idle after it warms up and a slight loss of power. Anyway I'll change the oil first since its due. Thanks all for the input, let you know how it turns out.

Changed the oil, it looked worse than I expected for 10%. Anyone know how accurate the DIC is on oil condition? I think I will start changing oil before it hits 25%. Anyway, I recorded and cleared the codes. The P0014 did not come back, but the P0011 came up again almost immediately. So it looks like I have a bad intake cam position sensor. The intake and exhaust sensors look identical. Can I pull them and change places to see if the code changes? This would tell me if one is bad. Also I can't fine the Camshaft Actuators at any of the common parts places (including online). Are these a dealer only item?

Here's a thread that may help answer a lot of your questions, as for swapping things around, I wouldn't advise it since these engines and their control systems can be a bit picky.

As sleeper said, try rockauto.com, NAPA, Advance, AutoZone, or any good parts house and you should be able to find the actuator solenoids at a very reasonable price. Link to thread below.....
