While driving my car stopped moving. Yes, literally stopped moving forward in the middle of the road. It would however move in reverse and luckily I was less than a mile from home...so I drove it home in reverse. I got it towed to a shop and was told I need a new transmission. Total cost $2800. My fiancé says this is a fair price, my father and uncle tell me it's too much and that I need to shop around. So I'm bringing the issue here, does anyone have any insight on whether or not $2800 seems like a fair price? Any insight is appreciated!

A brand new transmission? A newly rebuilt transmission? Rebuilding yours? Will the price include a new torque convertor?
Really need some more info before commenting on the price.

A very quick search showed reman units coming in at $2,100 +/- for an '06.

Used transmissions with "good" miles seem to average $550-$600.

So if the OP was quoted on a reman unit with labor, $2,800 is probably not too far off the mark.

Yeah Mike. I thought the price was reasonable for a fully reman unit w/labor.
Just wondered what the OP's price quote was actually for.

Thanks for the welcome! According to the fiancé it's for a brand new transmission. I'm waiting on the actual quote paperwork to see what is being included but my uncle told me that I would probably also need a torque converter and one other part as well because they are recommended parts to replace along with a new tranny. I've asked the fiancé SEVERAL times over the past 4 days to get me the paperwork but he is insisting its a good price and the mechanic is reliable so just pay the man. The mechanic told him that if we bring him $1400 he will start the work and it will be done in 3 days, then all we need to do is pay the remaining $1400. I'm fine with that, but I want to know and see exactly what I'm paying for and make sure I'm going with the best option and price before I make that decision, and I need to make one QUICK. When I relayed the payment info to my father and uncle they immediately started saying something about that was fishy.

You definitely need to get things in writing, and be sure to verify that it is indeed a new unit. Half down and half due at completion isn't that unusual, but don't part with a dime until you are satisfied.
