No crank problem

Okay so I had to replace the clutch in my HHR and afterwards we drove it a few days even though the pedal was spongy, ( I have since replaced the master cylinder also.) But the car stopped starting from the ignition and even when we tried popping the clutch. I did find that there was a bare spot rubbed in the aIternator wire and there was a spot where the battery wire had gotten hot against the block( my fault for not securing them adequately), but with no bare spot. I covered the bare wire with electircal tape and checked the starter today by crossing the solenoid and starter contacts and you could hear the motor run but the solenoid didn't engage to turn the engine. I'm assuming that it's the solenoid that is bad, which should fix my crank problem, but it's also reading power steering and service ESC and traction control on the dash. Am I missing something here or am I on the right track with the crank issue, and what could cause the other issues to surface??

to the forums!

You should get the battery load tested.

Make sure the bolts inside the underhood fuse block are tight. The bolts need to be tightened more than you would think. There is a point of resistance, and you think they're tight, but then you turn them more, they get loose, and then they'll get tight.

Make sure all the connections from the battery, to the underhood fuse block, to the starter, then to the alternator, are clean and tight. Also inspect the battery terminal clamps, they have been known to crack.

Did the fuse box get removed? Probably stopped tightening the 2 halves before the final ciicks. That is the common problem with "no crank" after engine/trans pull.

I'm in the process of checking the wires and also I am going to go check the fuse box before continuing the wire check. If it comes down to checking all the wires between connections, could I check for continuity on the wires to speed the process along? Also could remnanants of oil on spots of the fuse box be a problem that I should clean up??

Problem averted!!

It was the fuse box. I had a suspicion that was it after reading your post about tightening it and thinking it was tight. The first one I tightened I felt it pop and was worried I had broken it. Thanks for the help guys!!

Be sure there is 1 wire connected to the fuse box nearest the firewall and 2 on the other.
