I bought a Kenwood KDC-152. It's a fairly basic stereo by today's standards: AM/FM/single CD; 18 FM presets; 6 AM presets. $60 on-line. It is a single-high unit (single DIN?), fitting into a double-high (double DIN?) opening, so I bought an adapter kit on ebay which provides a storage bin in the lower 1/2 of the opening, pre-wired harnesses to plug into the vehicle harness plugs, and an antenna cable adapter. It looks as good as a factory install. The only down-side is the new stereo accent color is red, whereas the accents in the instrument cluster are blue (and by any measure, that is not much of a down-side.)

Thanks for the info on a chime unit. At $60, I think I can live without the sounds.
