oh boy flex pipe time...

Hey there HHR fans,
First your site rocks! Your the first place I go to when my 08 starts taunting me lol. So thank you for this place and all the knowledge!

So headed to work heard a odd noise then......the dreaded hissing when accelerating... great...
Saw the dealer and guess what they won't cover it because its not in the pipe by convertor its higher up. My HHR just hit 60,000.

B.A. Bowtie you rock, that thread you posted with pics was great! but no access to welder.

BeachBum1 you also rock for posting the auto place you bought from and saying you took it to local shop to fix. That is what I am doing.

Local Midas said the say price $120+part.

Thank you all for your contribution to this forum, I wish I had more to contribute to this place instead of lurking when I have a problem.

Thank you All!!!!!!
Erik

I would try a different dealer, couldn't hurt. Technically it is one piece with the cat, and is now letting pre-cat exhaust into the atmosphere. :)
I've heard too many bad things about Midas, and the price is a little on the high side, but its up to you and what other shops are local.

make a few phone calls to small muffler shops if you can find them. I found the chain shops were not interested unless they can sell you the entire section with the converter, it's easier and more lucrative. Considering the shop's time and overhead I felt it was a fair deal at $100-120. The welder needs to pull the pipe down, cut off the end, put the new part on and adjust, tack weld it, take it down and finish welding all the way around then reinstall. Rock Auto had the part to me in 2 days.

That is exactly the way I did mine with acetylene and brass rod. Could use a coat hanger wire. Don't have a wire welder which would be faster. Arc would work too, but I prefer acetylene.
