Oil filter leaks down?

Hi folks, My chev HHR 08 oil shows over full after it sits overnight. I know I put 5 quarts in it and it checks good when checked after I first shut it down. Any one else notice this, or is it a problem? Thanks Fred https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/images/smilies/sad.gif

When you first shut it down, it should read a little low. After it sits for a a few minutes, it should read full.

Sounds like you may have overfilled it.

You have too much oil in the engine. Trust the reading when it has sat a while.

Fred, is it possible that the old oil did not completely drain out and when you added the 5 quarts of new oil it would show overfill? The approach to my barn is a slight uphill angle and works perfectly for getting a complete drain but the 1 time I drained it on the flat floor of the barn itself I didn't get it all out. and it showed a slight overfill.

ok, old thread, but here is my experience, most oil filters for the ecotec engines have the wrong size o ring on the bottom plug part of the filter(including some ACDelco ones). This allows almost 3/4 of a quart of oil to drain into the pan from the oil filter housing. The dipstick will read way overfilled in the morning, and the engine has to pump up the oil on startup resulting in a few seconds of noise, and extra wear on the motor. Also, if the o ring is really small, you could be losing oil pressure too???? Purulator filters are the only ones I have found lately that have a fat o ring that fits snug in the drain hole.
