I think I recall somebody getting a head for a 2.4 when he ordered 2.2.

Yes, I remember also, happened to 2 members. But I think 1 of the camshafts (exhaust)?)was different.

For some reason I thought we were talking a 2010, even after looking at the pix.
I think my memory was that the 2.2 head had 2.4 cams, so irrelevant here.

One question I have and wondered throughout this thread.... Did your car smoke and fog up the neighborhood? Going through that much oil, supposedly burning it as it has to go somewhere, it should have been smokin like a smelter ? And on that note, there should have been a code pop up as well as I wonder how the CAT is holding up if you have one?

The car didn't smoke, I never saw any besides some when the engine was cold. I couldn't smell any oil burning either. Both cats look fine. I haven't had any pending or stored codes during this issue. I think the spark plugs look okay, but cylinders 1 and 4 are a little whiter than the other 2.

I measured the flatness on the decks of the head and block. The block was fine, but the head is just over the limit at 0.0015" transverse between cylinders 3 and 4. I think the head gasket should be able to correct that. I bought a fel-pro head gasket and it looks like it will seal better.
I will be reusing the head since it has newer components, hopefully the leak wasn't from that.

I got the head back on and all the timing components. Is it safe to rotate the engine by hand after the timing is set, or will I risk skipping a tooth? I want to ensure the engine is building compression before putting it back in.

I also found a video where they rebuilt a 2.2 ecotec and the head gasket didn't seal up:
Reading through the comments, I found that they originally used an enginetech head gasket, which is the same one I used previously. I'm guessing the coolant leaking was due to the head gasket. I haven't removed the pistons on the old engine yet, but I don't see where or how the engine block would've cracked.

The chain will skip if you rotate counte0clockwise; clockwise is OK. (analog clock, not digital)

You’re not going to get good compression numbers just turning it by hand.

I just wanted to make sure that each cylinder was building some compression, which I checked and they are.

Is there any easy way to lock the crank while installing the flex plate?
