Outside Temp

Outside temp readout is 72*F. Actual temp is 90*F. Coolant Temp says 185-189. Coolant level is normal. Just had oil changed at Jiffy Lube a few days ago...

Anyone else think something may be wrong here? Just my outside thermometer?

Outside temp reading has never been accurate. The sensor is under the headlight, so its affected by airflow through the fender, sun shining on the bumper etc. and there is a huge lag to register changes, sometimes 15-20 minutes.

And the outside temperature reading would have nothing to do whatsoever with the coolant level, nor the coolant temperature reading. Maybe I am totally misreading your posting?

The outside temp monitor may be bad. My 99 Buick's failed, once replaced the temp gauge worked fine. The one in my HHR works fine.

Take it on a good run Kev, the temp sensor needs at least 5 minutes of driving at speeds exceeding 18mph before it'll update. That being said, I've had mine get stuck on a temp for a few days before starting to "act right" again.

Like whopper said, it's totally independent of other vehicle systems, so not connected to your recent service work.

Mine gains several degrees sitting in the sun, but driving down the roads cools it right back to were it should read. It is always with in a degree or two of the local radio reports while driving.
