Overheating

New overheating problem.

Driving home last night I noticed the temp going up. When I got home it was up to 237. Got out and checked the fan and it was not running. Reached in and pushed it by hand and it started running.

Today, drove it around for a while with no problems. Everytime I started it, I made sure the fan was running. A/C on. Sitting in the driveway, i noticed the temp rising. When the A/C cycled off, the fan shut off. A/C kicked back on but fan never did. At this point, the temp was 235. Fan should have been running with or without the A/C.

Question is, is the fan the problem or is it something else?

Coolant level in the recovery bottle?

Also, give some particulars on the car.....year, mileage, new, used, how long you owned, etc.

2008 HHR SS, 90,000 miles, original owner. Recovery bottle about half full.

From the time it was new untill about a year ago, the temp alwasy stayed between 198 and 205. Since then, it is all over the place. Now 188 to 218 has been common. When that started last year, i took it to the dealer and they said there is no problem. Said don't worry about it untill it gets over 230.

Seems odd to me that just all the sudden the temp range would change without there being some kind of problem. And now after roughly a year, this problem.

If the fan starts ONLY when you 'start' it by hand, then you have a bad fan (that rules out a bad fuse/relay etc.).

The fan module is shot, and the relay may be bad. My guess is the fan module itself. One piece, bunch of parts. I had both go bad a few months ago. Replaced under warranty

90,000 miles on the clock Kev, sad to say but it'll come out of the OP's pocket.

Yes under powertrain. They tried to say it wasn't covered, I argued that it was required to make the engine work properly. I give them credit for trying to screw me.
