P0106 Code
P0106 Code
2010 HHR 2.4L 115k miles
Last night I was driving home from work and preparing to turn into our local outlet mall and my HHR just basically died. Didn't even realize at first that the engine had cut out on me. Every attempt to restart resulted in it running very rough and then dying. Finally on the 4th try or so I was able to 'limp in' to the mall and get the car safely parked. Went back today with a scan tool and the only code that showed was a PENDING code for P0106. I've never had any engine issues as far as it stalling or dying like it did. One potential thought was that it was low (about 50 miles range) on gas and perhaps what was in the tank was tainted. I did pickup about 3 gallons of premium on the way back to the mall today and added it to the almost empty tank. I waited a while, rechecked the codes (no change) and made a few attempts to restart it with the same result (engine stumbles and dies). I will try again tomorrow in case it is a fuel issue and sitting overnight helps get fuel in the system. Looking at the code list seems to point to a MAP sensor problem. That's a relatively cheap part and I'm pretty sure I could swap that out but I have no desire to dig deep into numerous other possible causes. Up until a year ago I did have a local mechanic who did work for mr 'on the side' but right now I really don't have a capable repair guy. Any advice would be appreciated. BTW I'm in Asheville NC.

Oldblue, thanks for the info. Sorry for writing MAP instead of MAF. It was late and I was in a hurry. I just ordered the GM part from Amazon and it should arrive tonight. In the meantime I'll get to my car and check the wiring but either way it's a $40 part and replacing it after 13 years seems like a reasonable decision. I remember replacing one on my Thunderbird years ago and it wasn't that old. Should I get some cleaner for the throttle body. Looks like some people recommend that. Will update you with my results. Thanks again, you are the (old) MAN.
donbrew,
Looks like I've got the 2 pros chiming in. Nothing regarding the air cleaner being touched lately, I'll put that down for #2 and change it if this does the trick. Probably time to change it anyway. This is no longer a daily driver and tend to drive it during the summer (since the AC works) versus my Saturn Vue which I drive more in the colder months.

When the air filter is changed the MAF must be disconnected and frequently forgotten to re-connect.
I didn't look the code up, just followed your post.
P0106 is indeed the MAP. The description of the test is quite long and complicated. Here is a pdf:
