just busy for the rest of the day and the next couple but not using my car so i'll update when I test it!

and thanks donbrew for pointing out the owner manual link, well what happened is I suddenly got into learning car repair after a life of not caring about cars at all . living rural braught that mechanic blood out, my dad is a plane engine mechanic. important to be self-sufficient here, also to work on the truck and dirtbike. replaced the trucks water pump and was like hey this is rather fun to learn.

Odd, the free manual does not come up, but the $50 printed one is available. Not sure I need it that badly at this point though with how good the online resources are. I downloaded the shop manual!

I have it open right now. You have to click on 2006 Chevrolet HHR Manual

Hey i'm trying to understand this for when I try it, you said "Just unplug the fan and put 12 volts on one pi and ground to the other."
So do you mean unplug the cord directy coming off the fan or try to power it through the fusebox terminal and the ground nut?
if you mean the first one, is there anything i need to take off the car to access that or just jack it up?

Just imply the fan and test at the two terminals of the fan motor
