Pesky Oil Leak 07 2.4
I have been down this road maybe 3-4 times on different HHR's. The first time I called a mechanic and they quoted me $150, I did it myself. I get better and faster everytime. The first one was just practice, since autosone did not have acdelco, I got duralast, it lasted about a month and then I ordered the felpro off rockauto and did it right.
Dreaded Crankcase mating halves Oil Leak
I have a 2007 LT 2.4 that has the dreaded 2 piece crankcase halves leaking at the factory silicone seal. I replaced the rear main, crankshaft position sensor, Oil pressure sensor, valve cover gaskets, oil filter o ring etc etc. I put GM dye i the oil and saw it leaking down the block from above the starter. pressure washed the engine and brought to dealer who confirmed the diagnosis. The car has 160k on it so I'm thinking of just swapping out for a rebuilt 2.4 long block. No sense in fixing a 160k motor. My question is: has anybody repaired or sealed this seam with the engine in the car? IE sand down the length of the seam and JB weld or special silicone seal on the outside? Definite design flaw with GM. Any help would be appreciated!
It’s not really a GM design flaw, more a silicone supplier issue. Leaks happen.
like the oil style oil pans you could wipe down the seam as clean as you clean, brake cleaner spray or even rubbing alcohol, then apply a sealant sparingly along the seam .
Worth a try, but before you do check the crankshaft position sensor and knock sensor see if it’s leaking there , it could also be the crankshaft seal or the passenger side output shaft seal at the drive axel , depending on the angle of where you park , Gravity can fool you.
Now in your case the dye is indicating the area of the leak , so you know where to clean and seal

What is so dreaded about it? Rare is more like it; I have never heard of it. Is there any chance the engine has been rebuilt; they might have used the wrong RTV.
The seam is below the oil filter and pressure sensor and above the oil level. How much oil could you possibly be using? Just a seep does not warrant any dire action. Some oil additive might seal it up.
