Power Steering cutting out but fuses OK - still the motor?
You guys are the best. I attached a link and sent it back with my email of concern to the CM dealer here, waiting for response. Why is it when I talked to Chev Head Office I wonder that they did not admit anything about this? Makes one wonder how honest the Corporate world is, will keep you all informed but must say thank you for your help and support! Forever grateful!
x2 what OLDBLUE says - make sure you print off that info from GM - and remember the replacement is covered under an EXTENDED WARRANTY, not a recall.
Note what Oldblue posted from that GM posting - the wording and coverage is important:
"In addition, 309,160 non-turbocharged Chevrolet HHRs from the 2006-2008 model years (and several hundred 2009 models) and 96,324 Saturn IONs from the 2003 model year that are not subject to these recalls will be given lifetime warranties for replacement of the electronic power steering motor."

Red thread #11, all dealerships are not the same!
I've attached the actual NHTSA document that identifies GM Technical Service Bulletin 14119. Read the entire document. Note: GM bulletin number 14119 will be implemented for model year 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 Chevrolet HHR (non-turbo) and model year 2003 Saturn ION to provide EPS Motor replacement for the life of the vehicle. I took my 2007 to the local Chevrolet dealer with a copy of this document in hand explaining that my power steering constantly quit working. The Service manager looked it up using my VIN # and scheduled me in. Yesterday (12/27/2019) they replaced the motor without ANY cost to me. He chuckled a little making a comment that this extended warranty is most unusual in that it is for the life of the car without any time-limit. Thank-you General Motors for doing the right thing.
Posting the same thing in 2 different threads is not going to get you better responses or info. Keep it in one spot to avoid any confusion.
Besides. Most of the good info and responses to your issue have already been posted in that other thread.
P.S. If you live anywhere near me I would gladly take a look at your car for you.

Okay sorry. I didn't mean that I thought the responses would be better, just maybe better to post the new one since the thread was much more recent. Everyone has been so generous with help & replies & I very much appreciate it.
Thanks for your offer. I'm in Tuscumbia, AL.

Oh okay I see you're at the other end of the state from me. I would say the better end lol but I'm originally from Tennessee & only a little way from the state line, which is good because I still have a lot of family up there. Thanks anyway, though, very nice of you to offer.
Hi folks
So, the latest problem with the wife's HHR is the power steering. I've read up on the known issues on here, checked the fuses and asked her (more like interrogated her
) to describe events in detail.
Here's what I know:
1 - Both of the power steering fuses are fine (and we've never jump started the car).
2 - When she starts the car, the power steering always works - every time.
3 - After between 30 seconds and 5 minutes of driving, the power steering cuts out and "Power Steering" shows in the DIC.
4 - If she stops the car, turns the engine off and back on again, the power steering starts working again. Every time. Then back to #3.
Here's what I think:
A - Clearly, whatever is wrong, the motor is not drawing sufficient overcurrent to blow the fuses.
B - I've read that the standard problem may be associated with the electric motor overheating. But I've confirmed with the wife that she has had extended periods of power steering after a failure and engine restart - which doesn't necessarily seem consistent with a heat issue to me.
Which brings me to my question: Does this sound like the standard electric motor failure to you folks, or does it sound more like a logic issue? I hate to think what the cost of replacing the computer might be, so I'm kind of hoping for it to be the motor.
OTOH, we do have one of those Progressive Snapshot devices installed, so I've asked her to remove that, the next time it occurs and to drive without it for either a couple of hours or until another failure occurs - whichever is first.
I'll report back on that last point when I have something to tell you, but in the meanwhile, I'd be grateful for any thoughts.

I am having the exact same problem with out a progressive device at all. I dont understanding why it stops while driving straight and turning has nothing to do with it cutting out. Probably not an overheating issue. Not sure what to do.
If you don't want to take the advice already given ( go to a dealer service department and claim the extended warranty) you are on your own. Nobody ever said anything about turning, it is the motor tripping an internal heat fuse, probably because the fuse is faulty.
