Power Steering Motor Replacement

I did read the postings on the power steering recall vs. warranty coverage. I was able to verify with my dealer that my '08 HHR is covered for lifetime warranty on the steering motor. Since my wife is afraid to drive the car due to GM's letter advising of a possible steering failure, I opted to replace the steering motor myself before the thing might break. The dealer part listed for $105.00 which I found acceptable. Problem was they advised me that the new steering motor would not work unless the computer was reprogrammed. The dealer would charge $200.00 for the reprogramming, and would not guarantee that it would work because they did not install the part. Dealer wanted $600.00 to do total job. The article posted in your "How To' library by Stryker does not mention any reprogramming stuff. What's the true story on this repair. Thanks for any help.

The true story ? Your dealer is giving you a line of BS. No programming is needed.

Mine did not require a reprogram, I'd visit another dealer and have them replace it under that warranty extension and PM customer service to report the dealership with big dollar signs in their line of bull, they are just bad for business!!!!

Dealer says you are covered, you fear for your life: dealer replaces motor.

Key words being "fear for your life".

And the guy is a liar. And over priced, do they charge $200 to program a fob? same amount of labor.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I'll recontact my dealer and then determine an action plan based on their response.
