Post Power Steering/Service Airbag Message

While driving, received Power Steering and Service Air Bag Messages on the DIC. Each stayed on for about 5 seconds and cycled back and forth between the two messages. Simultaneously, all the cruise control buttons on the left side of the steering wheel became inoperative, including the indicator light on the cruise control enable button. In addition, all front wiper blade functions on the right column stick became inoperative. All functions on the left hand steering column stick remained operational (turn signals, headlight controls etc.). Problem seems to clear after turning off car and restarting, Has happened 3 times in the past two weeks, including yesterday and today. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the clockspring is bad. Has anybody messed with the steering wheel lately?

Dealer in Morristown TN performed Air bag recall service a couple of months ago along with the ignition key recall; other than that, no.

The guy doing the ignition recall may have disturbed the connections.

It is not a big deal to take the steering wheel of then inspect the connections. Pull fuse #13 on the BCM and wait 30 minutes before you do anything involving airbags.

Wade through this link, somewhere in it you will find pictures and directions for removing the airbag and wheel. https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/how-...1912/page4/#32

Oldblue - Battery replaced about 2 years ago, but I will check the terminal connections to be sure they are not loose.

donbrew - I wondered about that myself...thinking wire bundle might have chaffed a bit after the recall work??? Or possible loose connection as you mentioned. might have to make it a weekend project if battery checks out ok.

Thanks!!

Has there been a recall from GM regarding the " Service Air Bag" warning on the DIC? I have a 2008 HHR, 2.4 LT, manual trans., w/about 83,000 miles on it. The aforementioned message appears periodically. I usually just depress the "Info" button & it returns to the regular mileage display. But here lately it has been coming on more often. I had the ignition switch replaced a couple of years ago under that recall. I've heard rumors of a possible upcoming recall for the airbags as well as the power steering system. Anybody heard anything???

To check the recall status of your car :https://my.chevrolet.com/recalls

No actual recall on the power steering, BUT there is an extended warranty if it fails, for the life of the car.
