Program Key / Engine Disable/ Recall QUESTION
Program Key / Engine Disable/ Recall QUESTION
My wife lost her set of keys. We're pretty confident she left them in the house door, and someone took them waiting for the right time to return. House locks have been changed, but I was wondering what we can do about securing her car. I read there is a "chip" in the key with a program that mates to the car. Is there any way we can program our spare key so the lost key will not work? I read some stuff online about programming a new key, but nothing about a new program. I realize the FOB will still work, and the manual locks will still be able to open the door, but I'm more interested in ensuring the car doesn't start.
We haven't had the recall completed yet. Does a new program come with the recall?
Anyone have any good easy start disabling tips, with a toggle switch for example? I thought about a hidden switch for the clutch start safety switch (or whatever it's called), but I'd imagine the car can still be started from a roll.

The key chip has nothing to do with the computer, like the Fob. The chips in the steering column and the key(s) need to be matched up. IIRC, there is a maximum of 10(?) keys that can ever be matched to any 1 steering column chip. The chip may be available by itself, somebody posted a catalog blow up indicating "maybe".
The procedure for adding a new key requires that you have an old key.
At least that's what I have gathered, could be totally wrong.

I would think you could just replace the anti theft module and have new keys matched up with it. I would also guess you would need a Tech II or equivalent to do this.
If I'm on the wrong track here, then just say so.
Anti theft module #10.

Pretty sure George nailed it in post #6, also check with your insurance company. They may pick up the cost as part of your coverage considering the circumstances.
But call your local agent, rather than trying to wade through the "triple talk" of an insurance policy, and this is coming from your humble Retired Attorney/Admin Guy.
