radio problem

hi,
i am new here , i searched but did not find a post with my same problem.
i have a 2008 hhr ss with 23,500 miles on it, i purchased it new.
the only problem i have had is the radio sometimes on start up would not tune anything in on am or fm ( just static ) but the cd player worked .

when i would turn off the ignition and restart it it would work correctly . it has done this a couple dozen times since i have owned it.

the problem is intermittent so i stopped by the dealer when it was happening so they could verify my problem.
friday they put in a new radio and today the radio will not pick up anything just static as soon as i put the key in , turning it off and on does nothing.
the antenna is hooked up and all wires.
there is a sticker on top of the radio that says made in 2007 and it looks old or heated . would a replacement radio have the only date on it as made in 2007. i am starting to think they did not change it. it is 1000 times worse now.
this is a base radio , cd player that does not have xm on it.

my warranty runs out in may.

has anyone had this radio problem

thanks

tina

First, welcome to the forum Tina. I'd head back to the dealer with my fighting clothes on, it sounds to me that you were either given a radio from a salvage yard or what is termed a "wall job". Wall jobs are when a dealer "fixes" a vehicle by parking it over next to the wall in the service department, letting it sit for a few hours and then calling the customer to come get their "repaired" vehicle. If they didn't replace the radio or perform any repairs, they have committed warranty fraud and they are subject to civil and legal sanctions. I would bypass the service writer and go directly to the service manager to address the issue you are still having, and request to see the replacement head unit or its packaging after the vehicle is repaired.

to the site. keep taking it back till they fix it. when radios are replaced under warranty there are sent back by an exchainge program so the radio you have if it was changed was one that was repaired for some other problem. at least thats the way chrysler handles there radios I asmume that gm an ford works the same way. its not a bad thing. if they sent your radio for repair you would have to wait weeks before it be repaired and reinstalled in your car. Im thinking you may have an antenna issue.

First Off to the forum Tina.

I wish you luck with getting the radio issue Tina. I have had problems with mine off and on since about two months after I bought it. I have been lucky lately - it has not acted up for about six months now. When it does - I lose rear speakers first, then the CD does not work, then I have no alarm chime for the doors and such, and finally all the speakers quit working. Every time I have had an issue the dealer tells me to bring it in when it is failing and “don’t turn the vehicle off”. And what do you think is the “first” thing they do - that’s right shut it off. And like yours - when you turn it back on “presto” its fixed. Thus far I have had the radio head replaced three times, the body control module replaced twice, both front speakers were replaced, and they supposedly went over every wire from the radio to each of the speakers looking for “pinched” wires. Like Lucky said - just keep taking it back and I would get GM Customer Assistance involved in this issue. Again - Good Luck

Only a guess: The HHR has an amplified antenna that requires power from the radio. Perhaps the antenna is not getting the power and thus no AM or FM reception or the antenna amplifier is bad.

I didn't know this. I just installed an aftermarket radio today and I didn't hook up the power antenna feed wire on the wire harness interface thinking I didnt need it.

Does it use this wire to power the amplified antenna?

According to my 2009 FSM the power leaves the Radio destined for the Antenna. I don’t know the voltage for sure, but imagine it is 12VDC. IIRC there are very few 5VDC levels at the output of the radio.

FSM says this wire is Pink.

I'll go back and hook that wire up then. Thank you.

Does your FSM show me where around the dash/console, that I can tap into feeds from the transmission position switch. I'm looking for a signal when the vehicle is in PARK and also when its in REVERSE.

i don't think it is an antenna problem because when the radio makes static or no noise at all and you turn the volume knob , it puts the volume graphic on the radio screen and no matter which way you turn the knob or how many times you turn the volume knob it does not get louder or quieter. and the volume graphic does not change by adding or removing those little sound blocks to the volume graphic.

monday i contacted gm customer assistance and have been transfered to 3 different customer specialists.
first cas (maureen) sent e-mail and told me she would call monday between 9 am - 11 am and she did not call.
i called her two times before 11 am left 2 messges.
later monday another guy called (mark) and left a message and said he was taking over for maureen to call him before 9 pm. i called as soon as i got home 7 pm and he was not there. talked to a guy named max on monday and he said mark would get me a new radio asap and easily . mark called tuesday and told me only that he was transfering me to a guy named mario.
mario called me wednsday and i could not hear him clearly or understand what he was saying.so i told him i would call when i got home at 3:30 which i did 3 times and no answer left message . no call back on thursdayen everytime i call extention of the person helping me at that time . i only get a machine -i leave message no return calls.

is this normal for these people?
