No dents on my tailgate. I learned the lesson on closing from a Sorento my wife used to drive. Same problem if you pushed it closed in the middle of the tailgate. Newer and cheaper metal certainly dents easier.

Always closed with the lic plate anyways...don't like the rattle it makes so I always had a hand on it all the way closed..grab handle was just for getting the struts collapsed/....

I cut 2 small pieces of vacuum line (1/8" long) & put one on each lower lic bolt end, touching the body.. No more Rattle..
