Relay Direction
That's it exactly. I cut it open to figure it out. First time I have seen this type of arrangement and I am used to relays with diodes we use for digital circuits. Donbrew was correct in what he said. these new fangled things are tough on us old mechanics!
New fan arrived yesterday, and last night when I got home, it was 3 degrees out, driving down the alley the temp hit 205. I tried switching the A/C on and setting it on high, the temp dropped to 192 after a few seconds. so maybe the fan works?? i didn't open the hood as it is in a snowbank and the ground beneath the snow is coated in ice, and it was 12:30 in the morning. (just full of excuses) If and when temps get above about 40, I'll be putting the fan in and swapping the thermostat, just so it is done.
Loose in the fuse box? Anybody’s guess
have a look here , maybe it’ll show up

I have a plug/cover similar to that over the power steering lug at the under hood fuse block location.
My thought is that it was installed by POV to prevent jump start cables from being attached there.
