Remote Keyless programming

Hi All,

I am new to this forum and I recently bought a 2011 HHR. I only got 1 keyless fob and I want to buy another. Is it possible to program these without going to the stealership. I know some of the earlier years it was not possible.

Thanks,

Jim Monahan

No. You might be able to find a locksmith to do it though.

Ya, earlier years you could do it yourself but not anymore. NOTE; you need to take both fobs and not just the new one to be programmed if I'm not mistaken.

True. If you lose your fob, and they have to start from scratch its more money. Copying an existing fob is less.

I will let you know how it goes for me. I ordered a pair of new fobs off Ebay, and was quoted about 65 bucks at the dealer here.....( Thats in Canadian wildlife funny money....lol)
Still waiting for them to arrive....

According to the FSM up to four FOBs can be programmed to a vehicle. The GOOD reason for taking all your FOBs to whomever you choose to do the programming, is that what you want programmed may exceed this limitation of four. Past owners could have lost unknown number of FOBs. Then they have to start over and erase all the unknown FOBs before programming the existing FOBs. For security reasons if is probably best to erase all FOBs and start over.

By the way 10 keys per vehicle can be programmed and that does not require dealership or locksmith programming, until the maximum is reached.

It is actually the CAR that gets programmed to the FOB, just for clarity.

And the Steering column to the keys.

ALL YEARS - I beleive.

Requires a Tech2 at the dealer, a substitute diagnostic tool from a well-equipped mechanics shop or a locksmith. However, not something you or I can do without specialized tools.

I have now added the local mechanic to the available options as I was looking around my next-door neighbors Snap On device recently and found the option for programming the FOBs. When I asked the mechanic about the possibility he related not all the things that are options are possible with his Snap On device. Since I did not have an extra FOB to program I did not attempt the proceedure.
