I have a tool that once the you pull it to release the tension it can be hooked to something under the hood to hold it in that position eliminating the need for a 'helper'.

Don't all serpentine belts use a spring tensioner? Anyone seen one that doesn't?

When I change serpentine belts, I change the tensioner also. Many tensioners use a rubber torsion spring and that rubber is subjected to the same conditions as the belt.

I keep spare belts new belts for everything I own.

Incidentally, I've found that Gates belts stretch and I buy them 1/2 inch shorter if I can't find another brand.

Okay but it really isn't much. It's a home made tool that gets the job done. It consists of a cheap 1/2" drive ratchet with a 3/8" adapter so it can be used on several different vehicles, a metal tube for leverage wedged over it, and holes on either side for the hook.

I change mine at 5 years or 100,000 miles which ever comes first (unless I note cracking before that). Cheap insurance.

It drives your water pump, altenator, and air conditioning compressor.
