Service Air Bag

When I left work tonight, the "SERVICE AIR BAG: notification came up on the dash display as well as the red warning light. It stayed on about 3 miles and then went out. Something I hadn't seen before. Should I be alarmed? I am afraid if i take it in, they will look at me with the same skepticism they did when I complained about the shifter being locked up and couldn't produce the symptom. Thanks, Bear

You could go to an auto parts and have a free code check done.... (don't have anything cleared, just check) see if it stored any codes. Service air bag is a safety concern so I would have it checked out and not blow it off... Still have any warranty?

I think I still have the service reps card and email address. 20 months old, 19K miles.

Take it in, hopefully they can find a stored code and the problem.

Yes please do take it in, Greybeard summed it up nicely, an air bag warning is something to take seriously and remedy promptly.

Dear zbear,

I would have to agree with 843de; take the vehicle into the dealership. In the owner's manual it will read for you to take the vehicle in. If you would like to provide me with the model year of the vehicle, I would be happy to look up what page this information is on so that you can take that with you to the dealership.

Here is the response I received from the dealer:If you would like to bring you HHR in that would be great. My only concern is that we would be going off history codes, which are stored in the on-board computer. This does not give us a for sure fault, which makes it very difficult to diagnose the problem. I would prefer when the light comes back on that we look at it. If we are open please come by with the vehicle, so we can find the problem for you. When you do arrive ((DO NOT)) shut off the vehicle per it might clear the hard fault.
I haven't barely driven it since the air bag warning came up other than change the oil and it hasn't came up since. Harley riding weather this week. I hope I'm not too far from home when it comes up again.

The HHR goes into the shop today for the "service air bag" issue. It comes on for about 30 seconds upon start up. Yesterday was the 4th time. Right after it went out I got the warning "SVC tire sensor". I scrolled through the menus and tire pressure showed zilch, then light went out, showed air pressures, and no warning. Dealer has been reluctant on looking at it since it wouldn't be showing a warning when I get there.

Dealer replaced the connectors under the seat. Hope that fixes the "service air bag" warning.
